Nino Rossi Estate Pipe

NinoRossi%2011.jpg

This is a very uniquely shaped Nino Rossi pipe, made in Italy. It has been very lightly smoked and comes with its box. The pipe is small and extremely light weight. It should prove to be a wonderfully enjoyable smoker for the man seeking these qualities in a fully bent pipe.

The pipe has no major issues. Minor issues include one very tiny toothmark, and some virtually unnoticeable oxidation on the underside of the stem. I don’t buff my pipes, but this oxidation could be buffed away in moments if desired.

Nomenclature: Nino Rossi 1886 45B Italy FEATHERWEIGHT and a star symbol. The stem is marked with an inset and stylized N, difficult to notice as it was left black.

The pipe comes in its box that is damaged in one corner and worn in the others.

You can learn more about Nino Rossi pipes here, a once tremendously successful and forward thinking company that unfortunately closed it’s doors only 1 year before it’s 100th anniversary.

$70.00 USD
$6.00 Domestic Shipping, Handling, Insurance.

Our 4th Of July

President John Adams wrote in a letter to his wife that the anniversary of America’s independence “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Sadly, just as people who delight in minding the business of others are successfully taking away our rights to smoke this same kind of people are also working to take away the right to traditionally celebrate the 4th of July.

When I served as Mayor not a summer went by without people coming before our City Council demanding that fireworks be banned within our jurisdiction. Our city never caved in to these statist demands, but many cities have, even one extremely rural city close to my current home.

Just as with pipe smoking bans health and safety is declared to be the reason for fireworks bans. Questionable reasoning indeed. Even if pipe smoking and fireworks were extremely dangerous pursuits individual Americans should not be denied the right to enjoy those pursuits. The bans are even more intolerable though because they are based upon false premises. As pipemen we know that pipe smoking in moderation is not a dangerous activity. Much the same with fireworks which manage to kill only 6.4 people per year on average in this nation.

Faulty facts won’t stop these public nannies though, nor will cries for liberty. All we can do is stop settling for second rate elected officials, stop voting for the ‘lesser of two evils,’ and start voting for men and women who are committed to upholding the freedom loving values our nation was founded upon.

The 4th of July is I think the perfect time for such reflections, especially given this Presidential election year.

Ferndown Millennium by Les Wood, Unsmoked

ferndown%204.jpg

Les Wood creates fine pipes of impeccable craftsmanship with traditional English style. This is an unsmoked Root pipe made in the year 2000, one of only forty. The pipe has a wide silver band with the Millennium hallmarks and it comes complete with a superb burl presentation box, a very heavy leather sock, and a certificate signed by Mr. Wood attesting to the authenticity of the pipe, and the fact that it is 1 of only 40 made to commemorate the new century.

This large Bent Rhodesian (about a Dunhill group 6) will be a superb addition to any collection.

This pipe is as new in the box and has no issues.

Nomenclature: Ferndown 2000 Hand Made In England Les Wood, full hallmarks on band, LJS on stem.

Over the past 8 years the silver has begun to develop a nice patina, this could be left in place or polished away as the next owner desires.

Many pipes are claimed to be ‘rare.’ This is the true article with only 40 of these beautiful pipes, beautifully presented, having been created.

Freedom To Smoke

Our noble, ancient, and to some sacred, use of the tobacco pipe is under constant attack throughout our United States. Here in Washington we face some of the worst restrictions, being unable to smoke in any building that is open to the public, and those key words ‘open to the public’ are defined much broader than they would be under any reasonable manner of usage.

Our fine Seattle Pipe Club is able to meet publicly only because tribal law and tribal land gives us a safe haven for the moment.

Travel too has become difficult. Smoking rooms in hotels are becoming ever harder to find given the legal restrictions on their numbers, and I’ve noticed that in many establishments the rooms that are set aside for smokers are far from the best as those establishments apparently strive to be seen as politically correct corporate citizens.

This past week I tried something different. A week’s vacation which would have normally been spent in a fine hotel on the beach was instead spent in a top of the line and remarkably comfortable RV. A mode of travel that is growing in popularity by leaps and bounds, a form of travel I hadn’t experienced since I was a young child.

I must say, it was a great trip, and a great way to stay. The drive from our home in the Cascade Mountains of Washington to the Ocean Beaches of Oregon was easy, I suppose due mostly to the legendary handling characteristics of the Airstream Travel Trailer, and the comfort offered by this home away from home is amazing in it’s simplicity.

Best of all, this trip we had freedom. The freedom of being in our own home. I was able to sit in a comfortable chair, in the shade provided by an expansive Zip Dee awning, pipe in hand. Enjoying the majestic beauty of nature while at the same moment enjoying the unique beauty of a heavy English blend. A luxury few can experience in this day and age when modern health-fascists are doing all they can to outlaw all luxury, doing all they can to turn this great nation built upon liberty into a fascist state based upon their own twisted notions of caring for their neighbors.

I have wondered why RV travel is growing in popularity, why more and more individuals and families are embracing it. Most people who think about it seem to have concluded that it is because of cost. Travel in an RV can certainly be the least costly form of travel, so the low cost argument seems reasonable on its face.

Having thought about it further though, I doubt if that is the case. RV travel may be inexpensive, but it also requires a massive financial commitment at the start. Beautiful new Airstream Travel Trailers can easily run over $80k, and the lowest cost trailers made anywhere all seem to be over $10k. Neither of these numbers come close to touching the tremendous price tags of the Class A motorhomes that seem to be preferred by so many.
Much like with a boat, the purchase price is only the beginning of possible outlays, for amazing accessories abound. Wonderful items, gadgets, and gizmos, all designed to make life in that RV just a little bit better, all designed to separate the consumer from as much of his money as possible.

With this in mind, I don’t think that travel cost can be the primary reason for the popularity of RV travel.

I think the popularity stems from freedom. Pipe smokers can enjoy their favorite blend in comfort. Dog lovers can have their companion by their side. Erotic adventurers can install their eyebolts into their bedframe. All things difficult if not impossible to do while in a hotel.

This first trip a success we have decided to continue our explorations in RV travel. We will be enjoying a luxury, a level of freedom too often denied in this day of ever growing smoking bans.

Dunhill Shell

dunhill%2010.jpg

Dunhill the worlds most famous high-end pipe maker, the standard by which all others are judged. This estate pipe is a very nice Dunhill Shell made I believe in 1976, it will prove to be an excellent value for it’s next owner.

Signature Dunhill sandblast results in a craggy and interesting finish giving this Dunhill a very traditional and sought after look in the pot shape.

This pipe has been gently smoked and has no major issues. Minor issues are:
Some darkening around the rim.
Shallow nomenclature.
To my eye, some ‘weakness’ in the whitespot.
These minor issues do not in my opinion distract from the look and feel of the pipe, and certainly have no effect upon it’s smoking characteristics. This pipe can be a wonderful addition to any collection.

The pipe is perfectly carved, lightweight, and comfortable in the hand and the mouth. The large bowl diameter of the pot shape will offer long and pleasurable smokes to its lucky owner.

Nomenclature: Dunhill Shell Made In England 16 416 with the whitespot located in the stem.

You can learn more about Dunhill pipes here, here, and here.

$224.50 USD
$10.00 Domestic Shipping, Handling, Insurance.

Mixed grain with a fair amount of quite nice birdseye lends a timeless and elegant look to this traditionally shaped bulldog.

The pipe has been well smoked. Issues are minor and are:
Toothmarks on stem.
Minor rim darkening.
Minor pitting around rim.
Despite these issues this pipe is a wonderful smoker, and will serve quite well in everyday use.

The pipe is very light and feels good in the hand.

Nomenclature: Savinelli de luxe Milano; Savinelli symbol 510 Italy, a gold in color bar is inset into the stem.

Crown Viking

crownv%2016.jpg

A striking but affordable handmade pipe by Danish maker Poul Winslow, this pipe will stand out in a crowd, will elicit second looks.

Beautiful straight grain runs all the way around the bowl of this pipe that leads to quite nice birdseye around the rim. The lower bowl and shank are deeply rusticated which lends a unique and exotic look to this traditional freehand shape.

This pipe has been very, very lightly and gently smoked and it has no major or minor issues. It will be a wonderful smoker, and a great addition to any rotation.

It is well balanced, comfortable in the hand, and lightweight. Length is about five and a half inches with a bowl height of slightly more than two inches. Inner bowl diameter is about seven eighths which leaves very thick outer walls.

Nomenclature: Crown Viking, Handmade in Denmark with the crown symbol on the stem.

The pipe’s sock is included.

About The Blog

I’ve created The Mayor’s Vice for a variety of reasons.

First, and I suppose most importantly, to enhance my own pipe collecting, my own pipe habit, my own vice. I hope to offer for sale here truly wonderful estate pipes at fair prices. I love buying pipes, talking about pipes, collecting pipes, smoking pipes, and selling pipes. I hope with this blog to have even more opportunity to do all of those things.

Secondly, I find that from time to time I enjoy writing about pipes. This blog will serve as a dedicated forum in which I can post my thoughts.

Lastly, I do tend to be long winded, to enjoy writing about a myriad of topics, so from time to time I will likely post about things beyond the world of the pipe.

I do want to take this opportunity to thank you for reading The Mayor’s Vice, I sincerely hope that you enjoy your time here, and that you will come back to visit again and again.

About The Author

My grandfather smoked a pipe throughout my childhood; I suppose that is where the interest came from. I remember my cousins and I all running around, puffing and playing with his unpacked, unlit pipes. I wonder now just how many of his treasures we managed to destroy.

I first tried smoking a pipe when I was fifteen, traveling in Kansas City. I bought myself a new Comoy’s pipe and some drugstore tobacco. Having not a clue as to how to smoke it was needless to say a less than perfect experience. I now know that the tobacco was probably the worst possible choice, and that what the tobacconist assured me was a superb pipe was in fact a very poorly made specimen which should not have survived quality control at the factory for surely it should have graded out as a no name second.

I did keep trying with the pipe through the years though, and eventually I learned how to blend pipe, tobacco, and technique into producing the perfect smoke. It was a long process, but a rewarding one and I do not regret the time it took to learn the art and the science of pipe smoking.

I’m currently an active member of the Seattle Pipe Club, and recommend the club highly to anyone with an interest in pipes and fellowship with other pipemen.

Through the years I’ve found that I love collecting pipes, and indeed tobaccos as my ever growing collection, and my long-suffering wife Melissa can attest. My collection is eclectic but English pipes and strong English blends are my first love.
